From the perspective of Winston Smith we see Big Brother possessing absolute power, the Inner Party keeping an all-encompassing surveillance, and the Two Minutes Hate turning aggression into mass worship. Is the world really like this, or is it just how a lonely, middle-aged man, Winston Smith is observing it? Krasznahorkai László regényében a fiktív keletnémet kisváros, Kana unalmas-békés hétköznapjait nyugtalanító események zavarják meg: a híres Bach-emlékműveken graffitik jelennek meg, egy elismert fizikaprofesszor rejtélyes módon eltűnik, száz év után ismét farkasok jelennek meg a türingiai erdőkben. A könyv főhőse, Florian Herscht, a falmosó úgy dönt, levélben kér segítséget Angela Merkeltől. Gondolataiban a mindennapi élet apró eseményei összekeverednek a világvégéről szóló metafizikai kérdésekkel, és ahogy a városban működő neonáci csoport egyre radikálisabban lép fel, Herscht világa is kezd darabokra hullani.
